For those of you that know me, this should come as no surprise. Today I spoke to my mechanic that is working on my bargain basement 1984 Porsche (its like a glorified Beetle, no GT, no Turbo, etc) to find out that I have been pretty much driving without a clutch. Now I knew I needed a new one, I felt a bit of play and it was not easy to engage the gears when the engine was cold - but I chalked most of that up to the 120,000 miles and the 24 years of age. Well, I was wrong. Luckily I know how to shift an old car like this or I would have had more problems, because according to Kevin (mechanic) the clutch was in pieces. Let me just say that again because I still can't believe it. Pieces! Accelerator bearings and bushing, flywheel, clutch plate - unrecognizable. It actually shouldn't of even moved but I have been doing Auto Cross skills and track days, nailing 7000 RPM like it was nothing, all without the underlying knowledge I was running on shaved parts.
All is good now, I scored a great new Sachs performance clutch on eBay for pennies on the dollar and it is being installed now - but it means something to me to know the final words form Kevin on this one: "This babies going on the wall - never seen one like this!".
